What this report covers
Technologies: Advanced Sensors, Radar, Lidar & Optronics, Command, Control, Communications, Cloud & Edge, Directed Energy Weapons. A sourced, structured 6-page analysis for European defence and dual-use decision-makers, from the DFM research desk and built on official and primary sources.
About this report
Recent advances in photonic beamforming are transforming the way electromagnetic waves are controlled and transmitted for radar and communication systems. A new architecture, based on frequency-comb-steered ultrawideband quasi-true-time-delay (quasi-TTD) technology, allows beams to be steered precisely and continuously without the limitations of traditional electronic systems.
This approach eliminates the distortion known as “beam squint,” which occurs when different frequencies point in slightly different directions, reducing accuracy and bandwidth.
Key questions this report answers
- How does frequency-comb-steered photonic true-time-delay beamforming eliminate 'beam squint' to achieve wide bandwidth and precise, continuous beam steering?
- How does integrating radar imaging and high-speed wireless data transfer in a single photonic device benefit defence, autonomous navigation, aerospace and future 6G communications?
- What is the technology readiness level of photonic quasi-true-time-delay beamforming, and what are its main challenges and limitations?
- Why does replacing electronic phase shifters with optical frequency combs reduce hardware complexity and loss for next-generation sensing and communication systems?
