About this report
New generations of satellites are transforming how shallow-sea environments are mapped, making it possible to derive accurate underwater topography without costly surveys. Researchers at the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources (China) have developed a system that combines laser altimetry from NASA’s ICESat-2 satellite with multispectral imagery from Europe’s Sentinel-2 constellation.
The method corrects one of the major weaknesses of space-based bathymetry—the sparse linear sampling of ICESat-2—by generating virtual control points that simulate real measurements across wider areas.
