Euronext has introduced three new European equity indices designed to track companies contributing to the EU’s strategic autonomy. These are the Euronext European Energy Security Index , the Euronext European Aerospace & Defence Index , and the Euronext European Strategic Autonomy Index . Each index is based on a free-float market‐capitalisation methodology and is rebalanced quarterly. Euronext describes the indices as reference benchmarks for investment products, intended to “help channel capital to support the companies most critical to Europe’s strategic autonomy”. The Energy Security Index targets European firms in the energy sector.

Its universe is the Euronext Developed Europe Total Market. Eligible constituents are defined by their Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB) subsector. Specifically, all companies classified in any of ten energy-related subsectors are included. All companies in those categories that are listed in Europe (via any Euronext market) are eligible. There are no additional numerical filters at review: all eligible companies are selected, ranked by free-float market capitalisation, and weighted accordingly.

The index uses free-float market-cap weighting, subject to a cap of 20% on any single constituent. The composition therefore spans traditional energy (oil & gas producers and utilities), nuclear and conventional power generators, renewable developers and equipment suppliers, oilfield services, and key infrastructure operators. Major constituents are expected to include large European energy firms such as major oil and gas companies, power utilities, grid operators and leading renewable-energy manufacturers. By construction, the index reflects Europe’s energy sector as defined by ICB, covering both fossil and low-carbon energy. Strategic-autonomy dimension: The Energy Security Index aligns with EU energy policy priorities.

In the wake of recent geopolitical shocks, the EU has emphasised energy resilience and diversification (for example through REPowerEU).
