Today, NATO is fundamentally overhauling its Eastern Flank posture – moving from a reactive strategy of reinforcement after an attack towards a proactive posture of forward defence designed to prevent any incursion at all. This shift is rooted in hard lessons from recent history.
Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 shattered assumptions that conflicts would be localized or short-lived . NATO’s old model of a “tripwire” – small forward units meant to delay an aggressor until reinforcements arrive – is now judged too risky.
