Today, NATO is fundamentally overhauling its Eastern Flank posture – moving from a reactive strategy of reinforcement after an attack towards a proactive posture of forward defence designed to prevent any incursion at all. Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 shattered assumptions that conflicts would be localized or short-lived. NATO’s old model of a “tripwire” – small forward units meant to delay an aggressor until reinforcements arrive – is now judged too risky.
