Objective

REWASH is a 48-month project that aims to develop an innovative waste-to-value system for the removal and valorisation of microplastics (MPs) and microfibers (MFs) from wastewater, transforming them into high-value products. The proposed device combines photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems with engineered bacterial synthetic communities (SynComs) capable of converting degradation products into bio-based chemicals and bioactive compounds. To ensure comprehensive water remediation, a bioelectrochemical system (BES) is integrated to remove residual organic matter and nutrients, enabling both water purification and nutrient recovery. The resulting modular system can be adapted to diverse wastewater sources, from industrial textile effluents to domestic greywater originating from laundry and washing processes. The design and development strategy follows a stepwise approach and it will be guided by detailed analyses of both simulated and real wastewater samples from textile industries, ensuring real-world relevance. Computational modeling, including genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs), computational chemistry, and process simulations, supports system design, optimization, and scale-up. REWASH will reach a TRL of 4, demonstrating a functional prototype in a relevant environment. Overall, REWASH provides a circular and sustainable solution that mitigates microplastic pollution while promoting environmental protection, resource recovery, and the generation of value-added products.
