Objective
ENSEMO has developed a groundbreaking agricultural technology called SeedJection, that injects beneficial microorganisms directly into seed. This innovation enhances microbial survival and effectiveness, offering a sustainable alternative to agrochemicals like fertilizers and pesticides.SeedJection is a patent-protected, high-throughput, fully automated system that cuts seeds open without damaging the embryo, injects microorganisms, and seals them to protect the microorganisms. Unlike conventional seed coatings, which often result in low microbial survival, SeedJection ensures that microorganisms remain viable inside the seed, leading to more effective field performance.This technology is set to revolutionize agriculture by reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Initially focusing on soy seed treated with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, ENSEMO plans to expand to other crops, geographies, and microorganisms. Their long- term goal is to enable microorganisms to replace traditional agrochemicals on a large scale.ENSEMO's technology targets a rapidly growing agricultural market driven by sustainability goals, such as the EU's Farm to Fork Strategy. The company has already secured its first paying customer and is conducting field trials with 13 other European seed producers. Future plans include expanding to the Brazil and adapting the technology for maize.ENSEMO operates on a pay-per-use model - based on the volume of treated seed-leasing machines to seed producers. The EIC grant is needed for rapidly advancing the technology from TRL6 to TRL8 and adapting it for maize, while the equity component will accelerate growth and help scaling operations beyond Europe. This is expected to generate revenue of approx. €12 M by 2029. With its pioneering technology, strong patent protection, and strategic growth plans, ENSEMO aims to disrupt the global seed and fertilizer market, driving agriculture toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
