Objective
Preterm birth (PTB) affects approximately 13.4M infants annually worldwide and is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and lifelong disabilities in Europe, placing immense emotional, clinical and financial burdens on families and healthcare systems. While early intervention and treatment are key to saving babies, current prediction methods of the true onset of labour are inaccurate, often missing opportunities for life-saving interventions or causing unnecessary hospitalisations and overtreating babies without need.Pregnolia AG addresses this critical gap by introducing the Pregnolia Diagnostic System, a prenatal care platform that utilises the quantitative measurement of uterine cervical stiffness as the key early biomarker that determines the risk of imminent PTB. The Pregnolia Diagnostic System combines cervical stiffness measurements from pregnant women with our risk prediction algorithm to precisely identify women who are truly at risk of imminent spontaneous preterm birth. Pregnolia ensures timely, targeted intervention to treat, delay and prevent premature births in a cost-effective way.For pregnant women, the system alleviates anxiety by providing accurate risk assessments early in pregnancy, avoiding unnecessary treatments for those not at risk (75%). Clinicians benefit from objective, reproducible measurements that enhance decision-making and streamline workflows. Healthcare systems experience reduced NICU admissions and optimized resource allocation, translating to cost savings estimated at €508M annually across Europe and the US only for tPTL. Pregnolia has already secured several insurers who recognise the solution’s cost-effectiveness through improved maternal and neonatal outcomes. With the EIC support, we will conduct a pivotal clinical trial to validate the Pregnolia Diagnostic System, initially targeting women with threatened preterm labour (tPTL), those who present symptoms and are at increased risk.
