Objective

The GNSS Applications for Resilient and Digital Aviation (GARDA) project enhances CNS (Communication, Navigation and Surveillance) technologies that leverage DFMC (Dual-Frequency Multi-Constellation) GNSS, resilience against GNSS degradations including Jamming & Spoofing and enable sharing GNSS degradation information within the ATM ecosystem. In GNSS RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) conditions, this reduces the operational workload of flight crews and ATC (Air Traffic Controller) and helps to maintain safe and efficient airborne operations in all phases of flights.GARDA sets out the following key objectives: Assured airborne navigation architecture based on DFMC GNSS; Enhanced resilience of aircraft navigation architecture against GNSS RFI; Facilitation of mechanism for sharing GNSS RFI information across ATM; Reduction of operational workload through smarter information flow during GNSS RFI.The project aims to develop a robust airborne navigation performance solution with resilience to GNSS degradation including RFI. It will support multiple aircraft platforms during low level altitude operations, enhanced approaches and optimized descent operations, helping to reduce noise footprint, fuel consumption and emissions.GARDA will explore the concept of sharing real-time information about GNSS degradation to among airspace users. This shared awareness is vital for ATM to make informed decisions and keep operations running smoothly, efficiently and safely. It will be a key enabler for safe automation of future ATM operations. The consortium is composed of participants with experience in all the technological, operational and organization aspects required to bring the two defined SESAR solutions into real life. The project will be also supported by interaction with EASA and Advisory Board.Four validation exercises will be executed in two joint flight campaigns using two test platforms, test helicopter and test aircraft, to validate both GARDA solutions.
