Objective
The One Collaborative Training Program for Outbreak Preparedness and Universal Surveillance (OCTOPUS) aims to strengthen public health capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) by training epidemiologists and biostatisticians through a combination of Master’s programs, short courses, and practical field research. The program addresses the critical shortage of skilled public health professionals needed for disease surveillance, outbreak response, and data-driven policy-making.Fellows will complete a two-year MSc programme hosted by partner universities, including a one-year placement within partner National Public Health Institutes. Training is practice-oriented and integrates real-world datasets (including clinical studies and electronic health records) and applied analytics tools to strengthen and embed capabilities within national disease surveillance systems. Additionally, OCTOPUS will conduct workshops, datathons, and in-service training for public health professionals to enhance data management, statistical analysis, and modeling capabilities. The program is aligned with the Africa CDC’s Framework for Public Health Workforce Development and aims to create a sustainable, regional public health research ecosystem.Additionally, OCTOPUS will conduct workshops, datathons, and in-service training for public health professionals to enhance data management, statistical analysis, and modeling capabilities.
