Objective
Basquevolt, a spin-off from CIC energiGUNE founded in June 2022, is pioneering the world's first commercial solid-state battery technology. Basquevolt's key innovation revolves around our revolutionary gel polymer electrolyte, which is called to disrupt the electric vehicle battery industry. Today, the EU's 2035 CO2 emissions targets for the automotive sector are already under threat due to the high costs, limited energy density, safety concerns and environmental impact of current Li-ion batteries. Therefore, a 100% European alternative is urgently needed, which not only overcomes the limitations of Li-ion batteries, but also allows Europe to keep its historical leadership in the automotive sector while strengthening its technological sovereignty.Basquevolt's gel polymer electrolyte allows our solid-state battery technology to go beyond the state-of-the-art by solving the main technological barriers that have hindered the commercialisation of solid-state batteries until now. Our unique electrolyte formulations have resulted in a next-generation battery technology fully protected by 19 patents, which offers higher energy densities, longer driving ranges, faster charging times and enhanced safety and sustainability. On top of that our battery manufacturing process is highly compatible with the production equipment of Li-ion battery gigafactories, is less energy-intensive and less CAPEX intensive, demands less raw materials and has a lower CO2 footprint. With this EICA project, we will accelerate the optimisation of our electrolyte formulation, validate our technology with battery manufacturers and scale up electrolyte production to a commercial scale. Basquevolt's technology will not only boost the European production of cheaper, more sustainable and higher-performing batteries compared to conventional Li-ion batteries, but also make it possible for the first time for European electric vehicles to be as affordable and useful as traditional internal combustion cars.
