Objective
There are over 150,000 people on waiting lists for organ transplantation in Europe and the US today. Current transplantations cover less than 20% of the actual need, estimated at 1M organs by the WHO, due to the shortage of available transplantable organs. Predominantly used organ preservation methods fail at extending the pool of available organs. Perfusion at body temperature is the optimal organ preservation technology and it can expand the donor organ pool as it enables viability assessment and revitalisation before transplant. However, it is still underutilized in the clinical practice due to the requirement of blood, high costs and complexity of use, which makes it hardly scalable. Vivalyx has invented a game changing technology that unlocks the benefits of warm perfusion. This is Omnisol, a fully synthetic blood substitute solution that outperforms blood 3x in terms of organ viability and function during preservation. Vivalyx technology enables 3-4x organ pool expansion due to the organ resuscitation capabilities. Vivalyx was founded in 2022 by a group of scientists and medtech entrepreneurs with the vision of enabling all patients on transplant waiting lists to receive the organ they need. Through the EIC project Vivalyx will bring body temperature perfusion to the market, making this key technique of organ preservation scalable for the first time, creating tangible benefits for patients on transplant waiting lists.
