Objective

Severe stress urinary incontinence affects hundreds of millions of women and men in the world. It is an ignored public health problem, as it is often hidden. For those who suffer from it, it turns their lives into a living hell. Existing solutions are unsatisfactory. For men, manual artificial urinary sphincters (AUS), require the scrotum to be manipulated for each voiding, sometimes with the help of a relative for dependent people. It's humiliating. These devices, are associated with a significant rate of revision and explantation, notably because of manually manipulated implantable components and the constant pressure exerted on the urethra often leading to erosion and atrophy. The patient is plunged back into the hell of incontinence for good. For women, the most commonly used solution is mesh sling, initially developed for cases of prolapse. This solution leaves 15% of women incontinent, with a further 5% suffering serious, irreversible damage. To such an extent that they are the subject of over 100,000 lawsuits in the USA. Women are left without a safe, convenient and effective solution.Severe incontinent people urgently need a safe and decent solution. We are developing the first smart artificial urinary sphincter, designed to solve all the drawbacks of current devices. UroActive™ is: - connected: voiding is done by remote control or by gently tapping on the abdomen (no more genitals manipulation) - self-adjusting: the occlusive pressure is automatically adjusted depending on patient's position and activity - personalized: the surgeon can wirelessly adjust device parameters after implantation - secure: if the patient cannot control the device or loses consciousness, the device automatically opens to prevent overpressure in the bladder and kidney injury. UroActive™ will provide an efficient, reliable, easy to use and safe solution to minimise the risk of side effects and gives their lives and dignity back to patients
