Vitrealab – Quantum Photonics

Vitrealab is an Austrian deep-tech spin-off from the University of Vienna’s quantum optics group, developing a novel “Quantum Light Chip” for AR/VR display engines. The startup’s core innovation is a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that combines on-chip waveguides and micro-optics with RGB laser diodes to produce an intensely collimated, polarized light output. This approach aims to overcome critical challenges in next-generation augmented-reality glasses – namely achieving daylight-visible brightness, long battery life, compact form factor and high image quality. In strategic terms, Vitrealab’s technology directly addresses Europe’s goal of building a sovereign photonics and microelectronics capability: integrated photonic chips are now vital to advanced display, sensing, quantum and AI systems, and yet over half of EU photonics firms currently rely on Chinese components.

By developing a vertically-integrated PIC manufacturing capability in Vienna, Vitrealab could reduce such dependencies. Its recent €9.4 M Series A round (closed January 2026) led by European VC funds underscores industry confidence and industry demand for advanced AR display subsystems. Vitrealab’s spin-out pedigree, European IP focus and manufacturing footprint suggest it may play a niche role in bolstering Europe’s multi-domain situational-awareness and display technology industrial base, with potential applications in both civilian and defense ecosystems.
