Snowpack – Invisible Cybersecurity Networks

Snowpack is a European cyber‐security innovator spun off from France’s CEA-List research institute in 2021. It has developed a novel Virtual & Invisible Private Network (VIPN) overlay that makes Internet‐exposed assets (servers, IoT devices, data flows) essentially “invisible” to attackers. By fragmenting and anonymizing packets (“snowflakes”) and using dynamic routing, the system protects both content and metadata. Snowpack’s approach is distinctive in cyberspace: rather than relying on traditional firewalls or trust-based VPNs, it simply denies adversaries any discernible target.

This strategy directly addresses growing European defense concerns about cyber resilience and critical infrastructure protection. With four foundational patents and early customers among critical‐infrastructure operators, Snowpack exemplifies a new generation of dual-use, EU-based technology suited to the challenges of hybrid and multi-domain warfare. The following analysis, drawing on European institutional and technical sources, examines Snowpack’s strategic and technological profile with respect to EU/NATO priorities in cybersecurity, deterrence, and autonomy. Its core innovation is a patented Virtual & Invisible Private Network (VIPN) that cloaks sensitive web services and IoT devices by turning data packets into anonymous “snowflakes” routed over ephemeral paths. This falls under emerging European cyber resilience technologies (EDT) and secure C4ISR communications. The company is privately funded (raised >€2M in 2022) and has won French State innovation grants (iLab, iNov/France2030). Snowpack offers an EU-developed alternative to foreign VPN products, enhancing strategic autonomy in cyber defense.

In NATO terms, it bolsters secure multi-domain C2 networks and critical infrastructure protection.
