The drive for Next-Generation Platforms – namely the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) and Eurodrone – arises from NATO’s and the EU’s determination to retain a decisive technological edge over potential adversaries. After 2014, and especially following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Allied leaders became acutely aware that many Western legacy platforms (from fourth-generation fighter jets to Cold War-era tanks and unarmed drones) could struggle against the modern anti-access and high-tech capabilities being fielded by peer competitors.
