The European and UK land defence industry is supported by a vast secondary industrial base of specialized suppliers. These companies – often small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) or niche high-tech firms – deliver critical subsystems and components for main battle tanks (MBTs), infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and other ground combat vehicles. Unlike the well-known prime contractors (such as KNDS, Rheinmetall, BAE Systems, General Dynamics European Land Systems, Patria, or Arquus), these secondary suppliers operate largely behind the scenes. They provide the “brains, eyes, and muscle” of modern armoured vehicles: engines and transmissions, optics and sensors, protection systems, weapon turrets, electronic controls, software, and advanced materials. This analysis maps and evaluates Europe’s secondary land defence supply chain, focusing on technologically advanced subsystem providers, their integration into value-chains, and the geographic and technological clusters that characterize this sector. The aim is to understand how these companies contribute to Europe’s defence industrial capacity and how their activities align with broader European initiatives for supply chain resilience and strategic autonomy. Fragmentation has long been a feature of Europe’s armoured vehicle industry. European Union nations historically maintained numerous domestic manufacturers , resulting in duplication of efforts.
