MAG4Health – European Spin-Off Pioneering Portable Quantum Brain Imaging

Mag4Health is a Grenoble-based French spin-off (CEA-Leti, 2021) developing a helmet-like optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) system for high-resolution brain imaging. Its compact MEG scanner uses a quantum sensor originally built for ESA’s Swarm satellite mission, enabling room-temperature operation and high magnetic sensitivity. This breakthrough replaces bulky cryogenic SQUIDs, promising to democratize magnetoencephalography by cutting costs ~5× and eliminating multi-ton cooling systems. While Mag4Health’s focus is clinical neuroscience, its European-developed sensor technology – free of reliance on rare-earth or non-allied inputs – may strengthen EU strategic autonomy in high-end instrumentation.

This report analyzes Mag4Health through the lens of EU/NATO priorities: autonomy from extra-EU suppliers, interoperability potential, contribution to collective defense, transatlantic alignment, and supply-chain resilience in the context of emerging defense-relevant sensor technologies. Mag4Health is an academic spin-off from CEA-Leti Grenoble (est. 2021) specializing in quantum magnetic sensors for medical MEG systems. Its core technology is a helium-4 optically pumped magnetometer array (Quantum Technologies category) augmented by proprietary AI/ML signal-processing algorithms.

The system achieves non-cryogenic, wearable brain imaging with high spatial/temporal resolution, previously only available from a handful of cryogenic systems worldwide. This homegrown capability substitutes non-European MEG suppliers (e.g. imports from Asia/US) and uses European critical materials (helium-4, listed as EU-critical) rather than riskier rare-earth elements. Mag4Health’s portfolio aligns primarily with the EU’s Quantum and Sensor Technology priorities; its secondary AI/ML work is also on the EU list. It participates in EU research programs (H2020 Gateone) and national innovation schemes (Bpifrance i-Lab, Santé Numérique).

The company currently operates at TRL 7–8 (prototype demonstrated in hospital settings) and has ~25 patents protecting its quantum sensor designs.
