Flying Whales: Rigid Hybrid-Electric Airships and Strategic Heavy-Lift Logistics

Flying Whales is a French aerospace innovator developing the LCA60T, a 200 m rigid hybrid-electric airship for delivering oversized cargo to remote or infrastructure-poor regions. This heavy-lift solution can hover and unload payloads without runways, enabling point-to-point transport for forestry, construction, humanitarian or defense supplies, all with minimal carbon emissions. By blending lighter-than-air technology with electric propulsion, Flying Whales aims to reduce reliance on roads and heavy machinery, offering a sustainable alternative in Europe’s vast hinterlands.

Its mission-driven vision aligns with EU objectives: expanding development in isolated areas while supporting the European Green Deal and Net-Zero Industry Act. The company has attracted international backing (notably from France, Quebec and Monaco) and strategic partnerships, including with Safran for the airship’s electrical systems. Production will begin in France (Laruscade, Nouvelle-Aquitaine) before scaling to sites in Canada and Asia.
