Project Overview and Objectives The DES project was approved on 27 May 2025 as part of the EU’s sixth PESCO wave. Coordinated by Italy (with Spain as a partner), it aims to develop a modular, scalable high-energy laser weapon to be mounted on mobile platforms. Its focus is on enhancing surface-based air and missile defence (SBAMD) at short and very-short range (SHORAD/VSHORAD), explicitly countering drones (C-UAS), rockets, artillery and mortar fire (C-RAM).
