About this report
Smartflyer AG is a Swiss deep-tech startup founded in 2016 that is developing a four-seat hybrid-electric aircraft (SF-1) for general aviation . Based in Selzach (Canton of Solothurn, near Grenchen Airport), the company designs a novel modular powertrain in which a battery-electric motor can be quickly swapped with a combustion-engine “range extender” in the nose cone .
The SF-1 prototype promises lower noise and emissions and is pitched as a cost-efficient trainer, with reduced operating costs and quieter operation . Swiss authorities have supported the project through a special aviation fund under the Federal Office for Civil Aviation (FOCA) .
