About this report
Emerging from cutting-edge nanoscience research, the French startup Ion-X is pioneering a new class of ionic-liquid electrospray thrusters for microsatellites. Founded in 2021 as a spin-off of the CNRS/C2N laboratory in Palaiseau, Ion-X leverages decades of CNRS ion source expertise to create compact, high‐performance electric propulsion systems.
Its thrusters use a non‐toxic ionic liquid propellant and electrohydrodynamic emission to achieve thrust and efficiency levels far beyond existing small-satellite engines . In May 2025 Ion-X achieved the first ever in‐space firing of a European-developed electrospray thruster, validating the technology’s readiness .
Key questions this report answers
- What ionic-liquid electrospray thrusters for microsatellites is Ion-X developing using non-toxic propellant and electrohydrodynamic emission?
- How mature is the technology after its May 2025 first-ever in-space firing of a European-developed electrospray thruster?
- How do its CNRS/C2N origins and the dual-use small-satellite market shape partnerships?
- What capability gaps and dependencies affect Ion-X's electric-propulsion role in Europe?
