Objective

The rapid growth of light detectors is generating vast amounts of data, challenging conventional computing with high energy consumption and latency. This project introduces a hardware platform for in-sensor spatiotemporal processing using arrays of perovskite optomorphic devices, which exploit light-sensitive ionic migration to encode temporal information directly in hardware. Each device acts as a slow, light-modulated capacitor, retaining traces of optical signals that allow reconstruction of motion trajectories from a single readout, without storing or transmitting raw video, enhancing privacy. Building on ERC-funded research, we have demonstrated 2×2 arrays with reproducible light-responsive dynamics spanning milliseconds to seconds, enabling extended temporal retention while maintaining ultra-low energy operation. The Proof of Concept will scale this to 5×5 arrays, validate coordinated processing, optimize device architecture, and benchmark performance against conventional systems. This technology enables energy-efficient, low-latency optical preprocessing for applications such as smart surveillance, wearable sensors, drones, and autonomous vehicles, leveraging perovskites’ low-cost fabrication, tunable spectral sensitivity, and flexibility to create a scalable platform for neuromorphic optical computation.
