Objective

ASTRALIS aims to develop and demonstrate the key technologies and system design for a European reusable, modular, and autonomous in-orbit logistics system—the Logistics Component (LC)—for the ISOS Pilot Mission, reaching TRL 6. The objectives are: (1) mature critical technologies for docking, refuelling, and robotics to TRL 6; (2) achieve interoperability across all ISOS mission components via standardised interfaces; (3) demonstrate both commercial and governmental use cases for in-orbit logistics; (4) contribute to the detailed design and integration of the ISOS mission; and (5) reinforce European strategic autonomy, sustainability, and competitiveness in space. These objectives will be achieved by advancing ESA’s ASTRIS kick-stage design, integrating advanced guidance, navigation and control, modular payload racks, and the EURADI European Unified Refuelling and Docking Interface. The project will validate the system through ground-based and simulation demonstrations, develop standardised interfaces for interoperability, and ensure compliance with debris mitigation and sustainability principles. The consortium brings together 18 leading European partners, leveraging strong heritage from ESA and EU projects.ASTRALIS directly addresses the Horizon Europe work programme by closing the gap in European in-orbit logistics, reducing dependence on non-European solutions, and supporting EU policy goals of strategic autonomy, sustainability, and technological sovereignty. The project will enable new markets for in-space services, extend satellite lifetimes, and position Europe as a leader in the global in-orbit servicing and logistics sector, fully aligned with the expected outcomes of the ISOS Pilot Mission call.
