Objective
The INTOPTEO project develops and demonstrates an Integrated Optoelectronic Oscillator (IOEO) that combines a Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) and a Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit (RFIC) in a compact module. The IOEO provides ultra-stable, tunable signals in the 40–60 GHz band, addressing the increasing demand for high-frequency, low phase-noise local oscillators in EO and SatCom. These capabilities are essential for next-generation 5G/6G non-terrestrial networks and advanced EO missions.INTOPTEO's approach: (i) define system requirements and architecture (UCY), (ii) perform two design and fabrication iterations of the PIC (HHI), (iii) develop the RFIC including low-noise and power amplifiers (VIPER), (iv) integrate PIC and RFIC into IOEO prototypes (UCY), and (v) validate performance in laboratory conditions and operational ground-segment trials (Hellas Sat). This ensures progressive functionality and readiness, targeting TRL 4. UBITECH coordinates management, dissemination, and exploitation. The project establishes IOEO as a new building block for space systems, enabling higher-accuracy climate monitoring, more efficient EO missions, and ultra-stable SatCom links that support seamless 5G/6G non-terrestrial networks, strengthening Europe’s space technology value chain.
