Objective
The ORION consortium consists of 7 partners from 7 different European countries bringing critical expertise in spacecraft design and operation with world-class actors such as Thales Alenia Space, accompanied with experts in edge computing, system development and dissemination of critical data to the industry. This multidisciplinary cooperation will allow its results to be relevant, timely and impactful in one of the fastest-growing and most strategic industries in Europe.The ORION project will develop and validate a modular, secure, and interoperable space systems architecture enabling collaborative Earth Observation (EO) and Satellite Communication (SatCom) missions. By combining standardised interfaces, a multi-platform orchestration framework, edge processing capabilities, and abstraction ontologies, ORION will allow heterogeneous satellites to operate cooperatively in dynamic, mission-oriented workflows. A central innovation is a secure, hardware-agnostic service marketplace supporting the onboard deployment and execution of isolated applications within Trusted Execution Environments. ORION will demonstrate these advances through two use cases: multi-satellite cooperative imaging and in-orbit application deployment.Through these results, ORION will increase mission autonomy, improve responsiveness, and open new opportunities for SMEs and operators to develop scalable, dual-use space services. The project directly addresses the expected outcomes of the Horizon Europe Work Programme by maintaining Europe’s share of the global connectivity market and enabling new commercial services based on the digitalisation of space solutions, thereby reinforcing Europe’s competitiveness, resilience, and open strategic autonomy.
