Objective
Titanium is a critical raw material for Europe, yet the continent lacks domestic primary production and relies heavily on imports, exposing its industries to geopolitical risks and supply chain vulnerabilities. EMPowerMet addresses this challenge by developing a fully circular and energy-efficient titanium value chain based entirely on secondary resources. EMPowerMet introduces solid-state recycling technologies, Field-Assisted Sintering (FAST) and CONFORM™, to transform titanium swarf and end-of-life parts into high-performance sheets and wires. These semi-finished products are further processed through deep drawing, wire-arc additive manufacturing (waDED), and inductive heat treatments to produce hybrid components with reduced energy demand and material waste.Three industrial demonstrators will validate the process chain at TRL7: a fire protective helmet, two space landing gear structures, and an aeroplane service port. Therefore, EMPowerMet showcases the feasibility of replacing conventional, fossil-fuel-intensive processes with electrically and mechanically driven alternatives. EMPowerMet contributes directly to the EU’s strategic goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving resource efficiency, and strengthening industrial resilience. The project positions Europe as a leader in sustainable titanium processing paving the way for broader adoption of clean technologies in energy-intensive industries.
