Objective

Submarine permafrost, a vital component of the Arctic environment, plays a significant role in geological and environmental processes. However, critical knowledge gaps persist, necessitating comprehensive investigations. Our project, 'MANPERWISE,' seeks to address these gaps and enhance our understanding of this dynamic phenomenon. Despite advancements, uncertainties surround the extent, thickness, and degradation of submarine permafrost in the Arctic. 'MANPERWISE' aims to quantify these aspects within a designated study area, employing a state-of-the-art controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) system developed by the University of Malta. One key objective is to unravel the intricate relationship between permafrost degradation and seafloor geomorphic changes, with a specific focus on seafloor instability. By analysing data acquired through our CSEM system and comparing it with seafloor morphology, we aim to elucidate the mechanisms driving these transformations. Furthermore, 'MANPERWISE' envisions the development of a conceptual design for a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)-based or Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)-based CSEM instrument. This advanced tool will enable high-resolution, repeat mapping of submarine permafrost and Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD). Such innovation promises transformative insights into the Arctic's evolving dynamics. Dissemination efforts encompass scientific publications, research conferences, seminars, a dedicated project website, and engagement with policy-makers and the general public. Guided by Prof. Charles K. Paull (MBARI), Prof. Aaron Micallef (University of Malta), and Prof. Mark Everett (Texas A&M University), ‘MANPERWISE’ addresses critical knowledge gaps in submarine permafrost dynamics, offering insights with implications that extend beyond the Arctic region to global climate processes.
